dates back to 1901, when the first plans for a 60-meter jetty were drawn up. However, the large number of visitors quickly made it clear that this construction was not up to the task. The first pier with a length of 508 meters and a restaurant was built in 1906.
However, the bridge was already damaged by pack ice in 1918, followed by a fire in 1920, which destroyed the bridgehead. In the following years, ice caused further damage until a new pier with a concert hall and a platform about 500 meters long was finally built in 1925. However, this bridge was also badly damaged by heavy ice in the winter of 1941/1942.
Despite the destruction of most of the bridge, the Brückenhaus was preserved and served as a popular dance hall from the 1950s to the 1970s. During this time, however, the building fabric was neglected, which ultimately led to the need to demolish the dilapidated bridgehead and superstructure in 1978.
The support of Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker in 1991 finally led to the reconstruction phase. From August 27, 1992, the reconstruction was carried out in several stages according to the designs of the Göhren architects Müller & Herrmann, who were based on the models of the buildings from 1906 and 1925. The symbolic cutting of the ribbon for the structural handover took place on December 20, 1997 by the honorary citizen of Sellin, Hans Knospe. The official opening of the new bridge house and restaurant took place on April 2, 1998. With a length of 394 meters, the Sellin pier is now the longest pier on the island of Rügen.
